The LIFE programme is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment (Regulation EU/1293/2013).

The general objective of LIFE is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental policy and legislation by co-financing pilot or demonstration projects with European added value.

According to the new EU’s regulation for the period 2014-2020, LIFE co-finances projects that fall under two sub-programmes:

1) LIFE sub-programme for Environment :
     α) Environment and Resource Efficiency
     β) Nature and Biodiversity
     γ) Environmental Governance and Information.

2) LIFE sub-programme for Climate Action:
     α) Climate Change Mitigation
     β) Climate Change Adaptation
     γ) Climate Governance and Information.

The priority area “Nature and Biodiversity” of LIFE Environment focuses on the development and implementation of the EU’s policy and legislation about nature and biodiversity, as well as on supporting the further development, implementation and management of the Natura 2000 network, set up under Article 3 of Directive 92/43/EEC.
